Vernamfield Development – Transportation, logistics

Overview
The Vernamfield Development Project proposes the establishment of an international multimodal, industrial and commercial airport offering a wide range of aviation facilities and capabilities. The Development is a large and multi-faceted project centred on the redevelopment of a 2,000-metre long concrete runway located in the parish of Clarendon.

The project will feature the following main components;

  • Air cargo with logistic services capabilities
  • Airline maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO)
  • Aviation training school
  • General aviation
  • Light manufacturing and assembly (Free zone)

Project Concept
Historically, Vernamfield was the best location in the region for the USA’s Intermodal transportation system, and for the protection of their merchant fleets. The development project will be located on 2200 acres of land surrounded by an additional 3000 acres, which may be used for future expansion. The lands are majority owned or controlled by the Government of Jamaica and its agencies. The proposed business structure for the development is a joint venture between the Port Authority of Jamaica and a private developer, with various strategic investors as developers and or operators.

The project will be implemented in two (2) phases. In the first phase, the development will focus on the establishment of the aviation training school and rehabilitation of a small runway to accommodate training. The project’s second phase will involve the construction of a 4.2 km runway, which can accommodate the largest aircraft in the industry. The introduction of MRO, Logistics and Cargo activities will complete phase 2 of the development.

Project Costing
The total development project is estimated at US$1 billion to design and construct two parallel 11,000 foot runways and taxi ways. The development includes the construction of Category Five hurricane-proof aircraft hangers, which will include offices and warehousing.
